1. Domain
If you heard on the news names like amazon, google and you do not know what they are called, these are domain names. Every person or a company can register a domain name. Some domain names are already taken, some are not available for other reasons (e.g. someone bought them and just keeps them without using them at the moment). There are quite a few domain registrars via which you can register a domain. If you decide to do so, think about a name that is associated somehow with your business or stands out for this or another reason. Domains have various extensions ( e.g. co.uk, .info, .com , .ws, .net, .org,.pl etc) and they are priced differently. Some domain names may only be registered by limited companies, some (quite a few) are just registered and kept dormant. The best thing to do when you are about to register a domain for yourself is to think about as many alternatives as possible. In this way you stand a good chance of getting a name that really suits your needs.
When you buy one, you usually pay for 2 years. After this time, you can renew the domain (and pay again) or let it go and lose it if you no longer need it. One domain can be forwarded to another if you want to keep two addresses: e.g. myflowers.com and myflowers.org
For a co.uk domain you should pay anything from £5-£10, .com is slightly more expensive (around £20), though the prices vary.
2. Hosting
If you are a layman as far as hosting is concerned, think about hosting as if it were a room to store your future web site with all its contents. You need to ” rent ” this room and this is what you are paying for. Small web site (like a small room with few pieces of furniture) does not require lots of space, while a complex one, with lots of pictures needs more space. (like a few pieces of furniture in a bigger room)
However, if you are still unsure how much space you need, get in touch with us and we shall be happy to advise you.
3. Website
Even when you have a domain, hosting, you still need to organise your information in a logical and clear way. You can use an HTML language to create your page/s if you know it, but you can also create your website effectively using e.g. WordPress, which is the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world.
WordPress is easy to use even for a newbie and allows you to add many pluggins e.g. share it on Twitter or Facebook.
